I. International Lemko festivals

«Lemkivska Vatra» (Zhdynia, Poland)

One of the most famous Lemko festivals is the annual international ethnographic festival «Lemkivska Vatra» (Lemko Fire). It is held in the Beskids in the village of Zhdynia (Horlitz County, Lesser Poland voivodeship, Poland) for three days in the 3rd or 4th week of July. The organizer is the Lemko Association. The first «Vatra» (Fire) took place on August 12-14, 1983 and has been held annually since then. The purpose of the festival is to preserve and popularize Lemko traditions and culture through singing, dancing, artistic and live speech.

The idea of the festival came from the poet Volodymyr Graban and members of the dance-choir group «Lemkovyna». They believed that meetings of Lemkos of different generations, families and friends are very important for the preservation of Lemko culture. The first «Vatra» took place in the form of small informal meetings of «Lemkovina» and their fans.

Step by step, the festivals acquired a modern format of Lemko culture «Lemkivska Vatra» was first held in different places: in Charna, Hanchiv, Bortny, but since 1990 it has found its permanent address - the village of Zhdynia.

Every year about 50 bands from Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Canada and other countries perform on the big stage of the festival. Еhe main path leading from the entrance to the stage is called «Lemko Street», a place, where you can buy embroidered shirts, various handicrafts, CDs, books or paintings.

In addition to the big stage, there is also «Vatrochka» - part of the festival, dedicated to the youngest participants, where for several hours held master classes in crafts, competitions or entertainment for children. The winners of the competitions receive awards, gifts and diplomas. Competitions are also held for senior participants. The «Miss Lemkovina» election is taking place on the main stage, and a volleyball tournament is taking place nearby. Traditionally, a big fire is lit at the festival, which is the reason for the festivals name.

You can read about the festival on all Lemko websites. However, the «Lemkivska Vatra» has its own separate site:
